In the past the making of ropes to meet the needs of the market was done by craftsmen rope-makers. The rope making has been drawn on the home make of ropes and cords that is done as some threads are twisted with the help of a spindle, "vitel", a wooden wheel or rope maker's hammer. The thick ropes are made with a specific reel, drawn on the craft of the maker of goat's hair rugs.
According to the length of the rope that is to be made and an area is necessary for the twisting process. Therefore the ropes are often twisted in the open air.
The stretching of the cords (hempen for instance) is done as follows: at one side they are hooked to a firmly fixed cog- wheel with reels (4 or 5 in number; photo1) that end in hooks, at the other side they are joined to the hook of the "virbel"(device for twisting) held by an assistant(photo 2). Usually the ropes are twisted out of four groups of warped cords (photo 3). The cords divided into groups are driven in the small channels of the rope- maker's hammer. It has a head in the form of a truncated cone with four channels (photo 4). Thus the four prepared cords are twisted by turning the strings of the belt to the cog-wheel (photo 5, 6). After the cords are twisted they are wet to fasten tight (photo 7). Then the assistant holds the loop of the "virbel" and gives a rotary motion (photo 8). At the same time the master drops the hammer along the length of the warp as he presses and looses the hammer lightly up to the final twisting of the rope (photo 9-12).
In the end some final revolutions of the reels of the cog-wheel are done to get the rope thickness and after that it is moistened with a wet cotton pad at its whole length (photo 13). Then the ready rope is unhooked, its ends are tied together, it is wound into a hank (photo 140 and let to dry.
The rope is ready! (Photo 15)
