The project "Dyeing with Natural Colours" has been accomplished in the period from May 2004-April 2005 with the participation of a Japanese volunteer, Chikako Sato, from JICA and Etar museum.
The Bulgarian tradition of extracting colouring substances from plant roots and leaves is very strong. With the introduction of chemical dyes into our way of life these skills have been gradually dying out.
It was a real challenge for the team of Chikako Sato and Liliya Lekova to re-establish the use of collected empirical material and the museum experience from some periodical restoration of old practices.
This book is in the result of their hard work. The best thing is that Miss Sato has suggested an idea for a new eco project "Dyeing of Woolen Braids and Woolen Yarn and The Making of Articles from Them." This project will be realized by the museum in the near future.
And to Chika we wish health, interesting ideas and a return soon to Etar museum!

Textiles coloured with natural dyes give a heartwarming sense. Besides, when we gather plant materials for dyeing, we create for ourselves the pleasure of being close to nature for a longer time.
I have worked at the Architectural and Ethnographical museum "Etar" for two years and I've found that there are nice ways for getting natural dyes. Bulgaria is rich with plants that may be used for dyeing of natural fibers.
In the early spring dyes can be extracted from pruned new twigs and they give excellent colours. The plants of summer give very rich colour as dyes. When fruits (walnuts, chestnuts) fall naturally in autumn, we can use outer husks as dyes very effectively. The bark of the firewood that we burn in the fireplace in winter gives the yarn an attractive colour.
People who have an interest in natural dyes can use this book in other possible ways.
